Performance Tips that will improve computer efficiency

Over the course of several weeks your computer will acquire useless stuff. It’s like your closet, garage or the glove box in your car. Excessive clutter will build up. Boxes will fall out when you open the closet; the garage no longer has room for the car. When was the last time you looked through the glove box in your car? Find any gloves in there?

Despite its apparent efficiency, your computer works in exactly the same way. Excessive clutter will build up. You may not be running out of room, but it is possible that boxes (or your computer) will come crashing down when you open door.

Fortunately, there are easy ways to keep your computer’s storage closet "clutter-free".

Happy Closet

Empty the recycle bin. (Take out the trash).

recycledtrash

When you delete a file, Windows does not really throw it away. It stores the file in a recycle bin. It’s there just in case you did not actually intend to delete it. Your recycle bin is not a bottomless landfill. It too can get filled up. Empty your recycle bin to truly take out the trash.

Click on the recycle bin that is on your desktop.

Click file Empty Recycle Bin.

Empty the various programs wastebaskets, trash folders, deleted messages, etc.

trashcan

Programs such as Outlook, Outlook Express, Eudora, Netscape, WinfaxPro, maintain their own versions of trash cans or wastebaskets. Emptying these " trash folders" will improve the efficiency of these programs. The additional space gained in taking out this trash will also improve your computer’s performance overall.

Netscape Messenger Empty Trash

Eudora

WinfaxPro Wastebasket

Look for similar features in other programs.

Delete Temporary Internet Files

compfolder

Literally hundreds and thousands of little files make up the various pictures and images you view when you surf the internet. They may be little files, but the excessively large number of them will considerably slow down your internet experience. Delete these files regularly to improve your internet browsing.

Internet Explorer version 5 and above

Delete temporary files (this is different then temporary Internet files)

Under normal usage many Windows programs create temporary files and are supposed to delete them when you save and exit.

They are supposed to delete them but many times they do not.

The amount of useless and leftover clutter that I have seen in some computers is truly scary.

Temporary files and additional temporary folders left over in your main windows temporary folder will cause performance problems over time. The temporary folder needs to be cleansed and purged regularly.
