Recommended tasks to be done when you first get your computer: 

Update Antivirus Software/Scan for Viruses  
Run Wiindows Update for latest patches and critical fixes  
All Systems: Backup Your Computer
Set Internet Explorer to automatically remove temporary internet files when browser is closed. Tools, Internet Options, Advanced, Security Features
Desktop Systems:        Turn off Power Management  Do turn off your compute, monitor and printers if not being used for extended periods (4 hours or more)
Notebook Computers:  Turn off some Power Management features. 

Manage Power Mgmt on Notebook Computers with the understanding that battery performance will diminish over the life of the battery. It's also risky to have programs open and unsaved work when power management shuts off the screen, hard drive or CPU.  

Turn off hibernation feature from Power Mgmt Applet in Control Panel.   Its a good feature but consumes a large amount of hard disk space and can be troublesome.
Windows 2000 Professional:   

MSCONFIG UTILITY

Not installed or available in Windows 2000 Pro.  Use the version that comes with Windows XP or download MSCONFIG here. 
Good utility for managing and reviewing excessive start up routines in Windows.
Windows 2000 Professional , Windows XP Home & Professional: 

System Recovery Console

Install System Recovery Console Utility from Windows CD
Windows 2000 Professional , Windows XP Home & Professional: 

BOOTABLE ORIGINAL WINDOWS CD

Ensure that you have a bootable CD of the appropriate version of Windows.  Many name brand vendors do not ship the CD with the system.

INSTALLATION CD KEYS 

Ensure that  you have the CD installation key for the appropriate version of Windows.  The Certificate of Authenticity should be affixed to the side or bottom of your system.

INTERNET CONNECTION FIREWALL

Enable Internet Connection Firewall unless another firewall is in place and activated.

These features are hidden by default.  Showing these files may allow you to remove the many hidden temporary files that must be removed manually .

 

 

Windows XP Home: 

BACKUP UTILITY

Install Windows Backup from XP Home CD ROM. 

Insert the Windows XP Home CD.  Close the window when/if it automatically opens.  Click Start/Run 
CD-ROM Drive:\VALUEADD\MSFT\NTBACKUP.msi

May not be installed on default installation.  Needed to backup system state and run regular backups.  Install even if you have third party backup software

Windows XP Home and Professional: Create Password Reset Disk
All Versions:  Internet Explorer
Reduce number of days to keep Internet Explorer Page History
Control Panel:  Internet Options, General, Days to Keep Pages in History (set to 0, 1 or 2) 
All Versions:  Internet Explorer
Turn off Auto Complete Settings

Uncheck all options for Auto Complete.

If this computer is not on a network or you do not intend to share files or printers, disable the File and Printer Sharing Component. 
Does not apply to sharing files via the Internet

Uncheck or Uninstall File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks
All Versions:  Automatic Update Checking

Many programs automatically turn on their own automatic update feature.  

These auto updates components:

  • assume your computer has an always-on internet connection (DSL/Cable/other Broadband)
  • Reduce the overall system performance due to the need to constantly check for updates.
  • Reduce overall internet performance due to the need to constantly check for updates.

Check the following areas for evidence of automatic updates:

  • system tray
  • msconfig startup listing
  • Program Menu - Start Up Routines

If your computer does not have high speed broadband internet (DSL, Cable, other) disable all automatic update routines.

If your computer does have high speed internet, disable all automatic updates except system critical updates such as:

  • Antivirus Protection
  • Anti-Spyware Protection
  • Windows Operating System Updates
  • All other auto updates should be removed, uninstalled or disabled
All Operating Systems:  Review your system for extra startup routines and services
